The ubiquitous lamp shade transformed into a Japanese lantern

Stacked Shades

1997

I was very much interested in using recognizable objects and changing the way they read and are experienced. In this case I repeated large custom pleated lampshades vertically to create a column of light while the lampshade itself was originally intended to attach above a base. In this way of of breaking the rules is unexpected, beautiful and a bit funny.

Stacked Shades can be installed in rooms of varying heights. The mechanism inside allows the user to stretch or compress the height with all the shades evenly spaced.
